We had a similar situation in Burlington, MA about six years ago. I remember being a bit upset at first, and a bit worried that our youth group's reputation (among outsiders, and with parents) may take a few different hits, but the kids responded well, we had some ice cream at the food court. The mall cops did take it too far in my opinion, treating some of our groups in a similar way. It was mostly older men, and I doubt they understood what we were doing, nor the importance of youth ministry (or treating the kids as actual people who shop at their mall). I got over it, and just made plans at places where we were welcome. Strange also, that my Bible Study was asked not to meet at a coffee shop in Waltham, MA because other customers could hear us reading the Bible and discussing it (about 13 students). That was more of a soul searching for me. We had permission from the cashier girls, we bought tons of stuff, and were a growing group and met once a week. The owner saw us one day and didn't like that we met there. Providentially, a visitor to our group was a foster kid and helped out at a coffee shop down the street run by foster kids (and was also a book store). Ended up well, but youth ministry is certainly not welcome in many spheres. Hard to be an ambassador, when you're shut down.

I love your last question, Eric. I have often said that if you don't love student ministry then being a youth pastor must be the worst job in the world. The excitement, the passion and the calling must be there. And to be honest, if you are doing youth ministry simply for the money- you may need to call the men in the little white coats! :) Happy Comment Day!
